Football - CAF: Super League officially changes name

The idea of changing the name of the African Super League has been on the table for several weeks now, but it is now official. The announcement was made by the President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe.

The future competition, due to be launched in September, will now be known as the African Football League, the South African leader announced in an interview with BeIN Sports.

"We have decided to change the name of the Super League to the African Football League. Our friends in Europe advised us not to use the name Super League because of the negative associations with the recent failed attempt in Europe," he said. The European Super League project met with strong opposition from fans when it was first announced, and clubs wishing to join the new competition eventually backed out.

استقبل اعضاء الهيئة المديرة لفريقنا و على راسهم السيد حمدي المدب يوم أمس وفدا عن اللجنة المنظمة و المكلف بمعاينة ملعب حمادي العقربي برادس بخصوص مسابقة الدوري الافريقي (السوبر ليغ ) في نسخته الاولى.
و قد تم خلال هذا الاجتماع التطرق إلى كل النقاط و التفاصيل المتعلقة بمشاركة فريقنا في هذه المسابقة كما سعت الهيئة المديرة منذ قدوم الوفد على حل كل الإشكاليات التي يمكن ان تعيق مشاركتنا .

L’africa football league … c’est le nom désormais officiel de cette nouvelle compétition

Une nouvelle compétition africaine interclubs verra le jour en cette année 2023 à savoir l’Africa Football League (ex- Super League).

La première édition de cette nouvelle joute verra la participation de 8 clubs qui ont été répartis sur deux pots à savoir.

Pot 1 : Espérance de Tunis (Tunisie) , Ahly (Egypte), Wydad Athletic Club (Maroc), Mamelodi Sundowns (Afrique du Sud).

Pot B : TP Mazembe (République Démocratique du Congo), Simba (Tanzanie), Petro Atletico (Angola), Enyimba (Nigéria).
Le tirage au sort de la première édition de l’Africa Football League 2023 aura lieu le 04 septembre dans un pays qui sera déterminé ultérieurement.

Cette compétition aura lieu sous le format d’une Coupe avec des matchs à élimination directe selon le programme suivant:

– 1/4 de finale : entre 20-27/10/2023 (Aller/retour)
– 1/2 : entre 29/10 – 03/11/2023 (Aller/retour)– Finale : entre 07-11/11/2023 (Aller/retour)

Le lancement de cette nouvelle compétition n’a pas été du goût d’un bon nombre d’amateurs du ballon rond en Afrique qui ont notamment critiqué la passivité de la CAF devant la mainmise de la FIFA sur le football africain.
