United States to host expanded Club World Cup in 2025
June 23 (Reuters) - The first edition of FIFA's new 32-team Club World Cup will be held in the United States in 2025, world soccer's governing body said on Friday.
FIFA had confirmed in March that the revamped Club World Cup will be played every four years from June 2025. The FIFA Council unanimously appointed the United States as the competition's hosts for the first edition of the expanded format.
The United States will also host the 2024 Copa America while they are also co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup along with Mexico and Canada.
"The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men's club football," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.
"With the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament."
Confederation champions from 2021-2024 will be eligible to play in the new Club World Cup, which means Chelsea, Real Madrid and last season's Champions League winners Manchester City have qualified from Europe.
The current version of the FIFA Club World Cup -- an annual competition with seven teams -- will be discontinued after 2023.
FIFA said they have also agreed to postpone the launch of the bidding process for the 2030 World Cup for "additional consultation with all key stakeholders.
"The relevant bidding regulations will be presented for approval at the next FIFA Council meeting, due to take place in September/October 2023, with the bidding process to be officially launched thereafter," it said.
"The expected appointment of the host(s) by the FIFA Congress will also move from Q3 2024 to Q4 2024."
The FIFA Congress is due to take place in Bangkok, Thailand on May 17, 2024.
FIFA also appointed Indonesia as hosts for the Under-17 World Cup later this year, three months after the Southeast Asian country was stripped of the Under-20 World Cup , which was then held in Argentina.
The decision to stop Indonesia holding the event was taken after the country's football federation cancelled the draw because the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel's team.
Indonesia were awarded the Nov. 10-Dec. 2 tournament after Peru were stripped of the rights having failed to fulfil infrastructure commitments.
The FIFA Council also appointed Colombia as hosts for the Under-20 women's World Cup in 2024 while the Dominican Republic will host the Under-17 women's World Cup the same year.

United States announced as host of first 32-team Club World Cup in 2025
Europe will send 12 clubs to expanded competition
US hosting 2024 Copa América and co-hosting 2026 World Cup
The United States will host Fifa’s first expanded Club World Cup in 2025, football’s global governing body has announced. Fifa’s president, Gianni Infantino, confirmed the 32-team tournament on the eve of the 2022 World Cup final.
Among the participants will be 12 European clubs, including the Champions League winners from 2021-24, meaning Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City have qualified. The remaining European clubs will be determined by a ranking based on the same four-year period.
The other 20 slots will be filled by six clubs from South America, including the Copa Libertadores winners between 2021 and 2024; four from the North, Central America and Caribbean confederation, in principle the 2021-24 Concacaf Champions League winners; four clubs each from Africa and Asia, also based on the respective Champions League winners; one club from Oceania – the highest-ranked club from its 2021-24 Champions League winners; and one club from the host country.
“The Fifa Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men’s club football,” Infantino said. “With the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament.”
The US will also host the 2024 Copa América and co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The current version of the Club World Cup – an annual competition with seven teams – will be discontinued after this year’s tournament in Saudi Arabia in December.
The European Club Association has backed plans for the expanded Club World Cup but the World Leagues Forum expressed concern over Fifa’s “unilateral” decision to place it in the calendar.

United States to host expanded 32-team Club World Cup in 2025
The United States will host the Club World Cup in 2025, the first time the FIFA tournament will have 32 teams.
Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea already earned places as recent Champions League winners for the expanded tournament lineup that is set to test stadiums and operations one year before the 2026 World Cup.
The U.S. will host the men's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, and FIFA could yet give some Club World Cup games to those countries.
The Club World Cup will take place in June-July 2025. The U.S. was chosen as host during an online meeting of the FIFA Council.
FIFA praised "the United States' position as a proven leader in staging global events and because it would allow FIFA to maximize synergies with the delivery" of the 2026 tournament.
The Seattle Sounders FC also are in the lineup for the Club World Cup as the 2022 champion of North American football region Concacaf. The Americans are likely to get another entry as the host nation.
Storied European teams have visited the United States for preseason friendly games for years but the expanded club tournament will give fans a rare chance to see 12 of them play competitive games.
FIFA said in March the basic qualification path for clubs was to win a continental championship in any of the four years from 2021 to 2024 in the five main confederations: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.
Europe with 12 teams and South America with six are the only continents with more than four entries. Extra places are expected to be awarded according to team rankings by results a four-year span in continental competitions.
The current seven-team Club World Cup for continental champions played every season creates little broad appeal and FIFA has long wanted to stage a full-sized tournament every four years.
This expanded version in 2025 is a huge commercial opportunity for FIFA to try new broadcasting models and sign new sponsors, funding hundreds of millions of dollars in prize money for the clubs.
The influential European Club Association said in March it hoped for talks with FIFA on how to manage the commercial rights.
The format for a Club World Cup lasting about three weeks has yet to be decided. One option is guaranteeing the 32 teams at least three games each playing in eight groups of four.
The eight group winners could then advance to the quarterfinals. That would create a tournament of 56 games if a third-place game is included.
The current annual Club World Cup format will continue with a final edition scheduled for December in Saudi Arabia.
Reviving the Club World Cup was a priority for FIFA president Gianni Infantino on being elected in 2016, but his first project plan was blocked. A Saudi-linked $25 billion deal with Japanese technology investor SoftBank provoked anger from European football officials who saw it as secretive and an overreach by FIFA.
FIFA got agreement in 2019 for a 24-team event to launch in June 2021 in China, but that was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic before commercial details had been confirmed.
FIFA came back with a fresh Club World Cup plan after the Super League project led by an elite group of clubs quickly failed in April 2021 while causing turmoil for European football body UEFA.
Other teams already qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup are: Palmeiras (Brazil), Flamengo (Brazil), Monterrey (Mexico), Leon (Mexico), Al-Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan) and Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia).
