Azam set up Esperance clash

TANZANIAN envoys Azam FC have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup last-16 stage following a glut of goals in the return leg tie against South Africa’s Bidvest Wits at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam.

Ivorian striker Kipre Tchetche led Azam FC to a 4-3 home win, scoring a hat-trick and setting the other as Stewart Hall’s charges completed a 7-3 aggregate victory, having comfortably won 3-0 in the first leg a week ago in Johannesburg.

While celebrating making it to the round of 16 in a continental competition for the first time, Azam would be disappointed after conceding three times at home with a tougher test against Esperance de Tunis coming up in the last 16.

It had been sought to be a rubber stamp fixture for the Ice-Cream makers following that resounding win away but, Wits refused to throw in the towel and ensured the game was a thriller to watch for neutrals.

Hall was boosted with the presence of his professional players, namely Ivorian striker Kipre Tchetche, Rwandan midfielder Jean Mugiraneza and Kenyan Allan Wanga. The trio could not feature in the first leg after their documents presented by club management in Johannesburg failed to match with those at CAF forcing the governing body to leave them out of the tie.

Kipre Tchetche was named in the starting line-up, partnering John Bocco up front, with Mugiraneza and Allan Wanga starting on the bench.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt, meanwhile, made four changes to the side that featured in their 3-0 defeat at home, as Wangu Gome, Liam Jordan, Paseka Sekese and Somila Ntsundwana came in for Tebogo Moerane, Dillon Sheppard, Ben Motshwari and Joaquim Lupeta.

There were some superb finishes to savour as with the Ivorian international, Tchetche scoring first with an unstoppable low drive after 23 minutes to give the Ice Cream makers a resounding 4-0 advantage.

Tchetche then turned the provider three minute before the interval, playing in a well-measured low cross for Bocco, who coolly slotted home from a close range. Jabulani Shongwe managed to pull one back for Gavin Hunt’s side just before the break as the two sides went into the interval at 2-1. The unstoppable Tchetche added the third goal for Azam in the 54th minute.

The Azam top scorer raced to a through ball from Salum Abubakar and dribbled past goalkeeper before shooting into empty nets. It was an entertaining open game as both sets of players attacked at every opportunity and Wits succeeded to pull another one back in the 59th minute through Abednigo Mosiatlhaga. Tchetche then completed his hat-trick with three minutes of regular time remaining.

Azam launched a quick counter attack from a defensive position and Tchetche broke an offside trap to make it 4-2. But a lack of concentration at the back by Azam allowed substitute Henrico Botes to get on the score sheet in the stoppage time.

Azam will face Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis in the second round. The Tunisian heavyweights saw off Chad’s Renaissance with a 7-1 win on aggregate.

L'équipe pro de l’Espérance s'est envolée, dans la matinée de ce vendredi, vers Dar es Salam en Tanzanie ou elle va affronter Azam FC, dimanche prochain à partir de 13h15 (heure tunisienne) dans le cadre des huitièmes de finale de la coupe de la CAF.

Azam seek to downsize Tunisian giant

THE country representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Azam are determined to upset the mighty Espérance Sportive de Tunis in their first leg second round match at Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam this weekend.

The Tunisia topflight league, one of the major players CAF-backed tournament, are expected to jet in today ahead of the Sunday’s clash against Azam who are hoping to utilise the home ground advantage to claim a vital win over the North Africans.

Speaking with the ‘Daily News’, Azam FC Information Officer, Jafari Iddi said Azam look to upset the visitors regardless their reputation in their impressive record in their continental level events. Azam, he said, wants to write a better history and that is expected on Sunday.

He said the home advantage put them in a better position of proceeding into the next round. “Our opponents (Esperance) are expected to jet in tomorrow (today) by a private jet which will fly direct from Tunis to Dar es Salaam and estimated time of their arrival is 22:00 hours.

The team will be staying at Bahari Beach Hotel,” he disclosed. Furthermore, Idd added that preparations for the Sunday’s encounter are going on well as the match officials from South Africa are expected to arrive today in the evening ready for the encounter.

However, the Azam spokesman revealed bad news for the club supporters as the in-form fullback Shomari Kapombe will miss the Sunday’s encounter after he was rushed to South Africa for medical checkup after falling ill.

The on fire Kapombe is expected to be back in the squad ready for the return leg match to be held on April 20 in Tunis. Despite missing the services of the overlapping fullback who is among the key players, Azam spokesman said his absence won’t stop them from attaining their victory; although they know they have an uphill task to achieve it.

“We know we have a herculean task ahead as we are facing a great team, but with our preparations we are determined to achieve our ambition as we also have a better squad, ” he disclosed.

Azam who had a busy week ahead of the Sunday’s encounter, had to play two domestic league games in a row which the club has unveiled them as part of their preps ahead of the Sunday’s limelight game with Esperance. Both games ended in draw.

Azam drew 1-1 with Toto Africans at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza before being forced to 2-2 draw by visiting Ndanda FC. Azam eliminated South African premier league side Bidvet Wits after winning 7-3 on aggregate. They won 3-0 away in South Africa before finishing their opponents off with 4-3 victory in Dar es Salaam last week.

L’Espérance de Tunis affronte cet après-midi au Stade Azam Complexe à Dar es Salam l’équipe tanzanienne Azam FC, dans le cadre des huitièmes de finale aller de la coupe de la CAF.
