Nettey: Only Mental Fortitude Can Save Hearts

Over a decade ago when Hearts of Oak became continental champions, they did it in style; beating Esperance 2-1 in Tunis before signing it off 3-1 in the reverse fixture in Accra to win the prestigious CAF Champions League in 2000.

Captain of the Hearts side that took the continent by storm, Jacob Nettey, led a gifted side that dazzled every step on the way into the history books.

On Saturday, 17 May 2015 in Rades near Tunis, the ‘Phobians’ clash with Tunisian champions, Esperance, in a repeat of the 2000 historic meeting and like many of the Ghanaians' own supporters, Nettey is convinced it will take something special for the visitors to survive an onslaught.

Nettey looking back at their success in the new millennium told Cafonline.com about how Hearts defeated Esperance at their own backyard amidst countless frustrations that lasted their entire journey of the journey held at the famous El Menzah Stadium, once a fortress for the ‘Blood and Gold’.

The former captain who shared fond memories on their quest said: “We knew it was not going to be an easy match and we began preparing for that first leg two weeks to the match.

“The weather was against us and to solve that problem we decided to pitch camp in Egypt for a week in order to acclimatize. The weather was so cold which was a direct opposite of ours here.

“Once we arrived, we had issues with the quality of accommodation offered us and in the wee hours after our arrival, we were combing the city for something better.

“By the time we settled down, we were already tired. Then following some issues, we could not train for the first two days after arrival. We finally trained on the third day and the fourth day the match was on."

Nettey described the atmosphere at the stadium then as intimidating, insisting they were however, preoccupied with surviving the initial incessant attacks that was to greet them once the match got underway.

“We had spent two weeks watching every match of Esperance and practicing how to deal with their early sustained threat. How to contain their threats from the flanks, and not to concede an early goal. It was our only way of survival and also ensured we carried on with hope of coming away with a win.

“Once we played according to the strategy, we survived and won in a very special manner. It excited us. It strengthened our belief in ourselves and our campaign.”
Putting the spotlight on this weekend's meeting, Nettey said Hearts will be the underdog over the two legs, insisting only mental fortitude could give his former side a chance to progress.

“Esperance is far ahead of Hearts presently. Hearts have done well thus far but winning will be a big chore. It will require a good attitude, tough mental strength, complete focus and hard-work.

“The odd is against them and how they respond in the first leg will be crucial to their going forward. To ensure progress, they must at least walk out of Tunis with a draw. That way they can stand a chance of travelling to the next stage."

The return leg if fixed for the weekend of June15-17 in Accra with the aggregate winner over both fixtures progressing to the group stage.

Familiar Foes Rekindle Rivalry in Rades

Ghana’s Hearts of Oak will be on the road to Tunis to face Esperance de Tunis in the first leg 1/8th round playoff of the Orange CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, 17 May 2015 in a repeat of the 2000 CAF Champions League final meeting.

The Accra-based club won that tie 5-2 on aggregate for their only triumph in the premier continental club championship.

Hearts travel north with a new squad from the one that were 2-1 victors in the last meeting a decade-and-half ago, but on their minds will be the pedigree of their host on the continent as well as how the ‘Class of 2000’ achieved what was deemed the impossible in that win that defined the Ghanaian side’s success.

Hearts went ahead to earn the bragging rights over two legs, courtesy a 3-1 win in the reverse fixture in Accra. But as they journey to Tunis this weekend, they are the first to admit that repeating that feat will require more than sweet memories.

The Ghanaians have travelled thus far amidst struggles on the local front that ensured their followers had little faith in their continental journey that began with a win over Beninese side, AS Police to progress.

Though the maiden champions have recorded some impressive results en route this point, this weekend's encounter, the final stage in the journey towards the last eight, is by far their toughest test yet.

Without a doubt, Hearts no longer possess the brilliant form that guaranteed their continental achievements in the early millennium especially, against the background that they only entered the competition via the backdoor, following the withdrawal of Inter Allies, on the grounds of financial challenges.

The 20-time Ghana champions have done well by going past Olympique de Ngor (Senegal) and AC Djoliba (Mali) in an unexpected manner; something that could end up being their trump card if managed well.

Though the Tunisian side may not be in the league of the likes of Egyptian duo, Al Ahly and Zamalek in terms of CAF Champions League titles, Hearts will reckon a side that boast of five continental titles, with two coming from the elite CAF Champions League, will throw everything at them in front of their home crowd.

Coach Hebert Addo will need to dig deep to motivate his side to draw inspiration from their 2000 success against a North Africans side that have been consistent campaigners in the African top-flight.

The odds undoubtedly will favour the hosts who after winning their second CAF Champions League title in 2011, finished as finalists a year on, followed up with a semi-final stint and a group stage appearance in succession.

While Hearts struggled even on the local front during those times, Tunisia was gathering vital exposure and experience, something that obviously give the Esperance an edge.

Having failed to make it to the league stage of the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2010, the ‘Blood and Gold’ who were kicked out by Sudanese giants, El Merreikh at the 1/8th round, Esperance will seek to take full advantage of another opportunity to keep intact their rich continental history.

In the Esperance fold is Ghanaian right back, Harrison Afful, who could prove vital in terms of gifting basic information about opponents; an advantage any club will grab with both hands.

The battle lines are drawn for an expected thriller at the Olympic Stadium in Rades. The return will take place on the weekend of 5-7 June 2015 in Accra, with the winner advancing to the last eight.

La meilleure réponse aux clubistes et à tous ceux qui ne nous aiment pas, c'est une victoire rassurante dimanche contre les Ghanéens. Il faut oublier le derby et la perte du titre et se concentrer sur la reconstruction de notre équipe et la préparation de la prochaine étape qui ne sera point facile. Lemkachkha a besoin de nous dimanche et une belle victoire nous fera oublier un tant soit peu notre désillusion d' il y a quelques jours.

Well, Esperance is not in the best of shapes after it has lost the local premier league title and its elimination from the CAF Champions League competition. Because of injury, some important players will not be lined up. But Esperance supporters will be behind their team and this represents a great asset.

comme vous le savez ,en cas de qualification ,nous sommes obligés de garder les joueurs qualifiés pour cette coupe et parmi eux beaucoup qui n'ont pas le profil pour jouer avec notre DAWLA

À mon avis, ça n'a rien à voir avec la stabilité (que de changements et de va et vient depuis un certain temps) ! José Morais a grillé tous les objectifs de l'EST pour cette année et l'objectif majeur de la saison prochaine. Je suis, bien entendu, pour la stabilité, mais avec un coach qui ne nous fera pas perdre le temps pour rien ! Espérons qu'on est en train de le garder pour mieux choisir.

Son contrat expire avec la fin de la saison; espérons qu'il nous mène, au moins, à la phase des groupes de la CAF CC. Nous avons de bons éléments et des jeunes qui ont besoin d'expérience et cette compétition est une chance inouïe pour eux ! On peut construire autour des éléments valables de l'effectif actuel tout en bénéficiant d'une compétition continentale relevée pour forger le caractère du groupe. Les seuls matchs amicaux ne permettent pas choses pareilles !

par contre l'elimination contre Merikh c'est sa faute(malgres le ratage d occasions enorme .. yannick / jouini ) ui c vrai !
il faut avouer que 70% de notre échec c'est à cause de l effectif ! il y a des joueurs qui doivent quitter malgrés que certains ont un bon potentiel ! Darragi qui avoue : ahna cheb3anin titrouet .. derbeli yannick ben mansour .. jabeur .. harbaoi .. toutou .. gharsellaoui .. nefzi .. et la liste est longue !
Esperons que ca va bouger durant ce mercato sinon ca sera catastrophique !
et arretons de mettre toute la responsabilité sur l 'entraineur est ce que krol desabre kasri kanzari benyahia sont tous incompétents ou c la faute de l effectif ?

Au risque de te surprendre, moi je rêvais d'un meilleur parcours ! On aurait pu éviter la défaite face à l'ASG, fait mieux qu'un nul face au CSS - le nul que Morais a cherché - on aurait même gardé nos chances intactes en dépit de la défaite au derby - qu'on aurait aussi dû gagner ou se contenter d'un nul au pire des cas !!!

Krol, et autres, avait le même problème d'effectif.... En tant que coach, c'est à lui de choisir les meilleurs aux postes et non pas expérimenter lors de matches décisifs - ça c'est la responsabilité du coach. Un joueur ne s'auto-aligne pas !

Tu arrêtes ce que tu veux, mais tu n'a ni le droit, ni les moyens d'ailleurs, d'imposer une ligne de pensée à personne ! Tu as exprimé ton avis en toute liberté, tu n'as qu'à argumenter pour ou contre les points de vues que les gens éxpriment, sans leur demander d'arrêter quoi que ce soit ! Pour moi, la responsabilité incombe à José Morais en premier et dernier lieu. Il n'est pas le coach qu'il nous faut et toute minute qu'il passe avec nous est une perte de temps irrécupérable !

Merci MJ92 ! C'est un autre exemple édifiant ! Ce qui m'a choqué était la déclaration de Mhirsi plutôt que celle de Darragi ! Que les Sang et Or soient gavés de titres, c'est un fait qui ne les retient pas de récolter plus. Darragi a en quelque sorte fait une déclaration semblable à celle faite par Chammem pour dire que les titres à l'Espérance sont la norme, pas l'exception qui vient avec des trabelsiyas, il y a de cela quelques années, et avec un néo-tripolitain cette année !

Quand Mhirsi déclare que le coach leur a demandé d'évoluer en contres, on comprend, un tant soit peu, quelques éléments de la "philosophie" de Morais et du futur qu'il préconise pour l'Espérance ! Bien entendu, la formation alignée ne permettait pas un tel choix - Sanchez ayant blindé son milieu, pas Morais !
