A welcome performance.

Many of us go through lots of emotions when it comes to all matters Gor Mahia in recent times. But admit it; there is nothing one looks forward to more than the next game.

We put on the kit with pride and march to the stadium. We do this because we want this team to win so badly that it hurts. Like 90 minutes of hurt!

Last Saturday afternoon against Esperance Sportive de Tunis at Nyayo National Stadium was no different. But it was. It was the CAF Champions League and it gave all of us a glimpse of the amazing past, the incredible present and a future that could leave us searching for the right word for ages.

We saw a generation of Gor Mahia players that will probably go down in history; at least we hope that's how the future – Haron Shakava – ends his career.

It was a welcome display for the players and no doubt our amazing manager. Moving forward we were magnificent. Timonah Wanyonyi, Shaban Kenga and Kevin Omondi were driving, passing and playing as a team. I loved what Walusimbi, Akumu and Kizito brought to the game. And Danny was Danny.

It was a great display. There truly is no better feeling when the well-oiled K'Ogalo machine is cranking away. Confidence is beautiful to watch.

The final score line hurt, but I don't think that it was one that any of us supporters could have predicted. It was an incredible display that showed everyone that Gor Mahia can still play and indeed belongs to the Africa big stage.

Did we have some silly moments? Of course we did, but in the end we played like Gor Mahia. And we celebrated like Gor Mahia. March on to Stade Olympique de Rades Tunisia and hit them with lightning boys.

We are living the African dream!

We were tactfully weak against Esperance

The 1987 Cup Winners Cup final rematch turned out to be a high scoring affair with the Tunisians gaining advantage. Gor Mahia fielded a 4-3-3 formation with Ugandan defender Israel Emuge in place of the suspended David Owino. Bobby Williamson's team played more offensively than was probably expected.

Gor Mahia's Strong Start

Prior to the match Ruud Krol said he didn't know much about Gor Mahia explaining Esperance's reactive approach early on. Gor took advantage of the space left by Esperance's deep lying midfield duo to dominate possession.

Added to that, a high tempo and quick exchanges in the final third K'Ogallo were causing a lot of problems. This approach bore fruit with Gor earning a deserved lead from the spot. The home side's attacking trio, Godfrey Walusimbi, Shaban Kenga and Timonah Wanyonyi played key roles in that impressive start. Inevitably, the high tempo cooled down allowing their opponents to get into the game.

Midfield

As already mentioned, Gor Mahia had a lot of space in midfield capitalizing Oussama Darragi's no show. Not only did the Tunisian playmaker offer little in attack but also showed no enthusiasm in winning back balls.

Even when Gor Mahia's quick exchanges were not effective anymore there was almost no change in the midfield situation. Antony Akumu and Geoffrey Kizito's freedom was evidenced by how much space and time they had to send long passes forward-mostly to the left wing. In fact both of them had long range efforts saved in the first half.

Frustratingly, the hosts persisted with the quick exchanges in attack even when their movements appeared to have been read out by the Tunisians. This resulted in many lost balls that allowed Esperance to initiate fast breaks.

Gor Mahia was let off the hook thanks to the visitor's poor delivery, poor decision-making and a risky high line by Gor that caught Esperance forwards offside several times. It would have been more prudent if K'Ogalo would have opted for a more patient approach in attack since they were leading.

A word has to be put in for Wanyonyi. He was the most hardworking player on that pitch. The ever present youngster offered a passing option and battled to win back the ball.

The Flanks

The wings, which are Esperance's strong hold (pun intended), proved to be critical in this match. Two things played out here; Esperance using two 'traditional' wingers and Kevin Omondi's movement.

In the first half, Kevin was on the right wing-at least going by the team sheet.

While it has to be said that his drifting inside led to creation of chances his non committal to the wing proved costly. This always allowed Chammam and Akaichi to double up on Musa Mohammed. His isolation contributed to Esperance brilliance on that side and it is no surprise the equalizer came from there. Akumu also never played much on the right except when tracking Oussama Darragi.

This was in contrast with Gor Mahia's left side where Walusimbi was being complemented by Wanyonyi and Kenga-who also played as a direct ('traditional') winger for most of the game. It is from here that Gor created most of their chances with Walusimbi overwhelming.

Second half

Williamson read the game well as seen by his altercations in the second half. Kenga was moved to the right and as a result Chammam rarely ventured forward. This support made Musa Mohammed more comfortable in dealing with Ahmed Akaichi leading to stability on the right wing. Kevin Omondi moved left to enable him drift inside with the thinking that Wanyonyi and Walusimbi will cover.

This tactical move appeared to work until a moment of madness by Gor Mahia's defence. Largely to blame was Fredrick Onyango, who should have moved back to cover his post, and Emuge who was never near his man; Yannick N'djeng.

The implication of that second goal was that it swung the game under Esperance's control proper for the first time. The visitors now attacked from their right wing thanks to Afful getting behind the forward minded Walusimbi as Gor chased for an equaliser. They went twice close to killing the tie; both created by Harrison Afful.

Frantic Finish

Both Coaches made like for like changes thus only altering the tempo of the match. This enabled Esperance to continue controlling the situation perhaps to the point of getting lax; this seen by Khalil Chemmam conceding an easy corner and they were punished. An unmarked Haron Shakava rising to head home past a poorly positioned Ben Cherifia after Wanyonyi had swung in from the flag.

At 2-2 Gor Mahia should have brought on a defensive substitution as the frantic display late on witnessed K'Ogallo caught out a few times. The decision to go for a winner worked out against them as Haithem Jouini capitalized on another madness moment to score what could be a decisive third.

Emuge was at fault again as his supposed man basically tapped home in similar fashion to N'djeng. There was little time on the clock to allow for an equaliser, Gor Mahia only managing to go so close.

Esperance match raises Ksh 2.6 million

Ksh 2.6 Million was raised from the ticket sales of the CAF Champions League match pitting Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and Tunisian side Esperance.

This has been confirmed by the club's Secretary-General, Chris Omondi. Each V.I.P section ticket was going for Ksh 1000 while those for the terraces section cost Ksh 200 each.

More could have been raised from the match but cases of fake tickets being sold on some designated ticket selling points were rampant and word has it that some club officials were behind it.

Hope

Chris, who took over from George Bwana, has in the meantime congratulated the players for putting a solid display against their much fancied opponents.

-They (players) gave a good performance and I salute them. We gifted them three easy goals maybe out of naivety and reckless blunders but outplayed them in every department, Chris told futaa.com,

-We are hoping to perform better in the return leg and advance to the next stage, he added.

Squad for Tunis named
The Kenyan champions have named their squad to face the North Africans in Sunday's decisive Champions League return leg match away in Tunisia

Gor Mahia will depart for Tunisia in two batches to honor their weekend return first round Champions League match against Esperance.

The Kenyan champions lost the first leg 3-2 last weekend and have to win by two clear goals to be sure of going through to the next round.

The first batch will travel for Tunis on Thursday and will be followed by another group on Friday. The match will be played on Sunday. Those leaving on Thursday include Martin Kimani, who will be the head of delegation, club vice-chairman John Pesa as well as goalkeeper trainer Salim Iddi and several players among them Timonah Wanyonyi, Frederick Otieno, David Otieno and Eric Ochieng.

The final travelling party has: Rama Salim, Patrick Onyango, Musa Mohamed, George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo, David 'Calabar' Owino, Innocent Mutiso, Kevin Oluoch, Kevin Omondi, Jerim Onyango, Shakava Haron, Emuge Israel, Kizito Geofrey, Anthony Akumu, Walusimbi Godfrey and Dan Sserunkuma.

Attention Mr. Chris OmondiSecretary-General of Gor Mahia,
Esperance outclassed you, scored 3 goals and missed many more. Your team was helped by the referee who granted you a penalty kick which existed only in his mind. Rest assured that you will be given a very hospitable welcome but make no mistakes, Esperance players will see to it that Gor Mahia is thrashed.
