De Sa: Orlando Pirates have had it worse in Caf Champions

Pirates have a mountain to climb against Esperance as they continue their quest for the second Caf Champions League title

Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa has told the club website that the team knows what to expect in Tunisia as they continue to prepare for their crucial Caf Champions League game against Esperance on Saturday.

Pirates were held to a goalless draw in the first leg and Tunisia is expected to be hostile on the weekend, but De Sa says Bucs have seen it all in this competition.

"The guys know what to expect in Tunisia," said De Sa. "We have had it worse in this tournament and I do not think whatever may happen in that match or during our stay in Tunisia will shock the guys," he added.

The 49-year-old Mozambican-born coach wants his players to treat this semi-final clash as a final, and admits his troops will have to be psychologically prepared because the Esperance fans won't be easy on them.

"We talk to the players all the time. For this match we will have to be really well prepared psychologically, because the home fans won't make it easy for us. In fact we need to prepare ourselves as if this is already a final.

"We expect the home side to throw everything at us and push for a win, but they know we can equally cause problems and that should be an interesting match to watch," concluded Roger de Sa.

It'll be a battle of wits for Orlando Pirates

WHILE Roger de Sa relishes Orlando Pirates' most significant match in the African Champions League since 2006, the coach has warned his players that the second-leg semifinal clash against Esperance at Stade Olympique de Radès in Tunis on Saturday will be a mental challenge.

De Sa and his troops leave for Tunisia tonight.

Esperance, the 2011 Champions League winners, held the Buccaneers to a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium almost two weeks ago.

Their celebrations following that stalemate away from home signalled the mammoth task that Pirates face in the return leg.

However, De Sa yesterday backed his troops for at least a scoring draw against Esperance, which would be enough to see them through to the final on the away-goal rule.

"For this match, we really have to be well-prepared psychologically, because the home fans won't make it easy for us," he told the club's website.

''We have had it worse in this tournament and I don't think whatever happens in that match or during our stay in Tunisia will shock the guys."

De Sa was referring to the "worse than a movie" 1-0 play-off defeat against TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi in Congo Brazzaville in May - a tie Pirates won 3-2 on aggregate to reach the group stages.

This was despite a TV blackout the hosts engineered by barring the SABC's broadcasting crew from the stadium, a controversial red card and two ''dubious" penalties that goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa saved.

Such farcical scenes are not expected in Tunis, but De Sa said the club still expected a backlash.

Should the Buccaneers get a positive result, they will play in their first cup final since winning the competition in 1995.

Esperance have reached three consecutive finals since 2010, winning the competition once.

"We talk to the players all the time. In fact, we need to prepare ourselves as if this is already a final," the coach said. "We expect the home side to throw everything at us and push for a win, but they know equally that we can cause problems and it should be an interesting match to watch."

Esperance have an astonishing record at home, having lost just three of their 60 Champions League matches there in a period spanning 12 years.

Although that statistic is intimidating, the Buccaneers travelled to Egypt to face Al-Ahly in the group stages and handed the seven-time champions a 3-0 drubbing - their worst defeat at home in the Champions League, although the game was played in front of empty stands.

Pirates will arrive in Tunis tomorrow afternoon ahead of Saturday evening's (8pm SA time) showdown.

Gabonese Officials For Bucs Game

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Gabon referee Eric Otogo will be the man in charge of Saturday's CAF Champions League second leg semi-final game between Esperance and Orlando Pirates.

Otogo will be accompanied by Gabon assistant referees Theophile Vinga and Jean Engone, with Yves Roponat, who is also from Gabon, as the fourth official.

Esperance and Pirates played to a goalless draw in the first leg and another 0-0 draw in Tunis will see the two teams go straight to penalties. However, a score draw will see Pirates go through to the final on the away goal rule.

Meanwhile, Pirates will be boosted by the return of captain Lucky Lekgwathi in their defence.

As reported by the crew, Lekgwathi will travel with the team tomorrow, after sorting out his differences with the club.

With Siyabonga Sangweni injured again, Lekgwathi is expected to partner Rooi Mahamutsa at the centre of defence.

Orlando Pirates Football Club

The Orlando Pirates team will leave for Tunisia tonight at 21h45 via Cairo, where they are scheduled to land at 05h30. They will then catch a connecting flight at 10h00 and land in Tunis at 12h30 on Thursday afternoon.

After the semifinal match the team will return in two groups: one will travel via Doha, while the other through Dakar. Both groups are scheduled to arrive in Johannesburg on Monday 21 October.

In total, the team will travel 31 200 km and fly for a combined time of close to 24.5 hrs to complete the journey.

Lucky not part of travelling squad

Contrary to earlier reports, Lucky Lekgwathi is not part of Orlando Pirates' squad for the crucial second CAF Champions League semifinal against Esperance on Saturday.

The Buccaneers need a scoring draw or a win to progress to the decider, but will have to do so without their inspirational captain.

KickOff.com's source at Pirates reveals: "Lucky is not part of the squad because he hasn't been active after last playing against Al Ahly, and also because he was given a few days off for compassionate leave following the death of his aunt, so he didn't train.

"Instead, Roger [de Sa] wants to use him next week Wednesday against Golden Arrows [in the Telkom Knockout Cup] and the Derby against Kaizer Chiefs."

It leaves Pirates well short at the back, with Siyabonga Sangweni having recently torn his Achilles and Patrick Phungwayo out with a similar injury.

That means the fairly inexperienced Ayanda Gcaba is set to start alongside Rooi Mahamutsa, with Happy Jele set to wear the captain's armband.

Duo return to boost Pirates

Ntshumayelo: Working on fitness

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo is hopeful of regaining full fitness in time for Saturday's crunch CAF Champions League semi-final against Esperance in Tunisia.

The 23-year-old has been struggling with a foot injury sustained against Polokwane City last week Tuesday, with the playmaker needing to undergo a MRI to evaluate the knock.

However, those scans revealed the injury was not as serious as first feared, and he has since returned to training, as has forward Sifiso Myeni, who has been out with a groin strain.

"I feel good. My injury was not serious - I felt pain on my foot but the doctors said I'm okay," Ntshumayelo told Pirates' official website ahead of this weekend's vital tie, with the first-leg in Soweto having finished goalless.

"I have Tuesday and Wednesday to put in some work and let us see if I can make the squad.

He added: "We all want to play and be part of this historic moment. A win in Tunisia is important not only for Pirates but also for the country, so I hope to be in great shape before we leave for Tunisia."

faute d'un leader sur terrain ,faute d'un bon choix tactique ,ou de joueur ...un peu de tt.... y compris le niveau de notre championnat,
.....mais ce que j'aime en mon ésperance qu' elle est toujours présente et elle jouera incha'Allah cette finale (culture de club)

CAF CL 2013 : Les 18 Buccaneers pour Espérance - Pirates

Voici la liste des 18 joueurs retenus pour le déplacement d'Orlando Pirates à Tunis pour affronter l'Espérance Sportive de Tunis en match retour de la CAF Champions League 2013, et ce selon les médias sud-africains:

Meyiwa, Jele, Mahamutsa, Gcaba, Matlaba, Jali, Manyisa, Myeni, Segolela, Bacela, Klate, Mhlongo, Masuku, Makola, Masalesa, Mbesuma, Molangoane et Nzunga.

Le milieu Ntshumayelo et le défenseur axial Lekgwathi, pas au point physiquement, sont hors liste.

Gcaba serait vraisemblablement aligné à la place de Sangweni dans l'axe de la défense, alors que Jele portera le brassard de capitaine en l'absence de Sangweni et Lekgwathi.

Mobilisation totale pour les «Sang et Or» qui se préparent pour leur demi-finale face à Orlando Pirates

Les hommes de Maher Kanzari ont poursuivi leur préparation avec la même cadence de travail que celle effectuée la veille.. Tous les joueurs à l'exception de Mouelhi, blessé en équipe nationale, ont pris part à cette préparation qui s'est déroulée dans la bonne humeur, et qui devait permettre aux joueurs de se mettre dans des conditions idoines pour le match retour qui les attend le 19 octobre à Radès face à Orlando Pirates dans une rencontre comptant pour la demi-finale retour de la Ligue des champions.
Les camarades de Ben Chrifia, qui ne sont pas sans savoir la difficulté qui les attend face à l'un des géants du football africain, mesurent toute l'importance de cette empoignade comptant pour une place en finale de la Ligue des champions face aux Sud-Africains. Ragued, M'sakni et consorts ne comptent négliger aucun aspect de la préparation pour s'armer le mieux possible.
A cet effet, ils semblent très concentrés sur leur travail en travaillant d'arrache-pied durant cette trêve. Les «Sang et Or» sont appelés à poursuivre leur travail aujourd'hui à 18h00 à l'annexe de Radès.

Akaïchi comme toujours

Dans le cadre de sa préparation pour la demi-finale de la Ligue des champions face aux Sud-Africains d'Orlando Pirates, le club de Bab Souika a donné la réplique au Stade Gabésien. Certes, les «Sang et Or» se sont imposés par un but à zéro, œuvre de Akaïchi, mais Kanzari a profité de tout son effectif pour le voir à l'œuvre. Ben Mansour, Iheb M'sakni, Jouini et Akaïchi étaient les plus en vue.

A l'occasion du match Espérance ST-Orlando Pirates prévu le samedi 19 octobre à 19h00 à Radès, l'entraîneur Maher Kanzari tiendra cet après-midi à 16h00 un point de presse à la salle des conférences au Parc «Hassène Belkhodja».

Traoui et Yahia rétablis

Blessés respectivement face au Cap-Vert et à l'Etoile, le milieu Majdi Traoui et le défenseur Antar Yahia sont complètement rétablis de leurs blessures. Ils ont rejoint le groupe pour préparer leur demi-finale. Le dernier mot reviendra à Kanzari pour leur titularisation face à Orlando Pirates.

Demi-finale retour de la Ligue des champions Africaine : la formation de l'EST

L'entraîneur de l'Espérance Sportive de Tunis, Maher Kanzari, a annoncé lors d'une conférence de presse, jeudi 17 octobre 2013, que la formation de son équipe ne connaîtra pas aucun (sic) changement lors du match retour de la demi-finale de la Coupe d'Afrique des Clubs Champions, 18 octobre contre Orlando Pirates. Le seul changement sera celui du blessé Mouelhi par Aouadhi, Msakni ou Traoui.

Bucs' Home vs. Away Stats

It's astonishing to see Orlando Pirates' away statistics compared with those of their home matches and perhaps they tell a tale of what we can expect from Bucs in this Saturday's second leg semi-final CAF Champions League clash against Esperance in Tunis.

The first statistic that pops out is the fact that Bucs make significantly more passes at home than they do in away matches.

Bucs' last two home matches saw them make a combined total of 906 passes, with 780 of those passes ending up successfully with another Bucs player.

Away from home, the statistics paint a completely different picture in terms of Bucs' passing game. They made only 656 passes during their last two away matches, of which 517 were successful.

Another worrying statistic for Bucs at away matches is the fact that they tend to take far less shots at goal. While Bucs took 37 shots at goal in their last two home matches, of which nine were on target, they've only taken 15 shots in their last two away matches, with only four of them reaching target.

Bucs will certainly need all the ball possession they can get if they are to stand any chance of progressing through to the CAF Champions League finals. Keeping the ball for longer periods of time and moving the ball around more will definitely keep Esperance on the back foot for longer.

Tunis is a tough night to crack for Bucs

The jazz standard A Night in Tunisia makes one wonder what could have happened that night in 1942 in that northern African country for trumpet maestro Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli to pen a piece that has endured changes of music styles and eras in music, as well as inspired other greats to try their hand at it.

Whatever it was that inspired these musicians to write or record the song, Orlando Pirates might have their own version of A Night in Tunisia to remember.

Pirates take on the pride of that country, Esperance, in the capital city Tunis on Saturday evening in the second leg of the CAF Champions League semifinals. The first round in Soweto ended in a goalless draw, making this night in Tunisia a decisive one for all involved.

Esperance's Maher Kanzari decried the outcome of the night in Johannesburg as "a very bad result", but sensibly added: "We have to think about how to deal with them. The two teams are still with a 50% chance, and the chances are the same." Maher's counterpart at Pirates, Roger De Sa, agreed: "I'm content. If we score an away goal, we have a chance. 0-0 is better than 1-1 at home. It's an open game now."

An open game it must be with the night in Tunis being the one that will determine whether the host's quest for the third continental championship continues, or whether De Sa's charges can keep club boss Irvin Khoza's dream for a second gold star on top of their badge alive.

A goalless stalemate in Tunis will mean that the teams will have to settle things from the penalty spot. A draw with goals means Pirates will face the winner of the Al Ahly-Coton Sport fixture in the finals pencilled in for November.

Cauldron

Conventional wisdom would have it that Pirates are disadvantaged going into the cauldron that is the Stade Olympique de Radès, teeming with 25 000 devotees (the club has opted not to use all 65 000 seats at the ground for security reasons).

Closer inspection, though, will suggest that Pirates have played better against clubs coming at them than against those who parked the bus, with the Telkom Cup first-round tie against Mpumalanga Black Aces, which they won 3-1, and the encounter against rookies Polokwane City, in which the Buccaneers laboured to a 1-0 win, being two cases in point.

Pirates' best results in the group stages, the 3-0 and 4-1 wins over Al Ahly and Zamalek away and at home respectively, were as much a result of Pirates' boldness on the occasion as it was about the confident mentality of the two Egyptian clubs.

In Brazzaville, Pirates were defeated by a pitch more suited to quad-biking than football by AC Léopards' superior abilities.

In Tunis they will be up against a club that cannot help but take the game to their opponents with the hope that the fans make conditions as psychologically uncomfortable as possible. Esperance showed in Johannesburg that they are a disciplined outfit able to play for the outcome they had in mind before the game.

In front of their home crowd, the likes of Ghanaian international Harrison Afful, who frequently showed signs of impatience with the restrained approach, and striker Joseph N'djeng-N'djeng, who missed a glorious opportunity early in the game, might just want to flourish.

Chemistry

If De Sa has given a hint of how he will approach the match it would be that he allowed Kermit Erasmus to join the Bafana Bafana trip to Morocco last week despite Bucs' tough clash against Aces. De Sa played almost the same side that played against Esperance the weekend before, suggesting that he was going for improved chemistry and telepathy rather than resting a few tired legs.

In the Aces match, Pirates varied their play and, instead of the one touch, patient build-up that has characterised their game of late, they were given to bursts of sudden speed, leaving the opposition bewildered. Oupa Manyisa's goal in the dying minutes of the match perfectly summmed up this evolution in Bucs' style.

Another new dimension in Pirates' approach has been to bring Mpho Makola between the defensive midfielders and the main striker, giving the former Free State Stars man the role he was more familiar with and devastatingly effective in at his former club.

The injury to Siyabonga Sangweni and De Sa's decision to leave captain Lucky Lekgwathi at home means that Bucs might have some problems containing the Esperance strikers.

If Esperance start as the Tunisian national side – of which they contributed five players – did against Cameroon, Pirates can expect to be on the ropes from very early on.

Ayanda Gcaba will have to step into the central defence alongside Rooi Mahamutsa and they will have to be at their best, especially when flanked by the likes of Happy Jele, who tends to lose concentration at crucial times, and Thabo Matlaba, whose penchant for spectacular goals tends to see him neglect his defensive duties.

Pirates will also have to avoid the worrisome trait of conceding penalties when on the road. They have conceded four so far: two in Lubumbashi against TP Mazembe and one each against the Egyptian giants. Senzo Meyiwa, who saved three of those spot kicks, will not always be up for the job, as was demonstrated in the MTN8 finals, where Pirates lost to Platinum Stars on penalties.

It has become almost hackneyed that every match Pirates have played up to now has had a sense of now or never. This Saturday's Night in Tunisia again lends itself to such language, and for De Sa and company to prepare their own interpretation of the great classic.

Roger de Sa (coach) says Orlando Pirates won't play for a draw when they take Esperance…It would be suicidal to go to Tunisia with a draw in mind….We can't afford to do that, you have to play every game to win….We have prepared this team to win''…De Sa will tell his players upon arrival in Tunis today that victory is not an impossibility. " In the first leg we grew in confidence and should actually have won the game. Esperance had two chances in the opening 10 minutes and that was it Senzo Meyiwa (keeper) was virtually a spectator in the second half. Going there with 0-0 is not bad at all… It will be tough for Esperance to protect that result…I am confident that we can go there and unlock Esperance's defence. De son côté , le quotidien The New Age a publié un article dans sa page sports du 17 octobre 2013 sous le titre « Pirates want to rob Tunisians ». On y lit notamment :
''Orlando Pirates have vowed to defy the odds and beat Esperance in Tunis and make it to the final of the African Champion's League. Pirates are spurred on by a goalless draw recorded in the first-leg semifinal and the 1995 continental champions are confident that they will finish the job in Tunisia. In the first round, Esperance showed they are no pushovers. With an intact home record in the competition so far, there have been doubts as to whether Pirates have shown what it takes to beat the powerful North African club…Pirates will be without hard working captain Lucky Lkgwathi, but Collins Mbesuma is back to ameliorate Roger de Sa's scoring woes. Deputy skipper Siyabonga Sangweni and midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo are both out with injuries, giving Ayanda Gcaba and the young Lehlogonolo Masalesa a chance to make part of the starting lineup…De Sa says he is confident that his players have what it takes to come back with the all-important win. ''I have talked with players and we know that we can do it. The only thing we are worried about is that the home fans will not make it an easy one for us. Pour sa part, le quotidien Business Day de ce vendredi 18 octobre 2013, a publié un article intitulé ''Semifinal showdowns will provide fireworks''. Dans cet article, le joueur de Orlando Pirates Daine Klate estime que « Esperance have the advantage because of tournament experience, but are beatable. The last time they lost was last year against Al Ahly, and I have seen videos of how they were beaten. I'd like to think this is a start of better things to come, and hopefully we can play every season in this competition like they have been doing. That's how you improve. We can't look at this game as a one-time opportunity to try and go all the way. Al Ahly beat Esperance at home and we beat Al Ahly, so it can be done and hopefully we can take that with us''… They are a physical side and they got a result against us. Why can't we come here and do the same? The motivation comes also from the fact that we are now representing the country, not just Pirates''.

Expected Bucs XI Against Esperance

Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa has revealed his expected line up ahead of their CAF Champions League semi-final second leg clash against Esperance on Saturday night.

The Sea Robbers travel to Tunisia after a goalless draw in the first-leg at the Orlando Stadium - meaning a score draw will be enough for them to book their place in the final.

Discussing his selection on Robert Marawa's radio show, De Sa has opted to have Ayanda Gcaba partner Rooi Mahamutsa in the centre of defence for the crucial encounter.

Oupa Manyisa and Andile Jali will be looking to control the middle of the park while Tlou Segolela, Daine Klate and Sifiso Myeni will pour forward trying to score or set up striker Lennox Bacela.

The winner will go on to face either Egyptian giants Al Ahly or Cameroonian side Coton Sport in the final of the continental competition.

This is the expected line up:

CAF CL 2013 - Maher Kanzari : Réaliser le match qu’il faut !

Maher Kanzari a tenu un point de presse à deux jours du match retour de la demi-finale entre l’Espérance Sportive de Tunis et Orlando Pirates qui se jouera le samedi 19 octobre au stade de Radès à partir de 19h00.

Evoquant la rencontre, le coach « Sang et Or » a déclaré « pour se qualifier pour la finale, il faut savoir bien négocier les deux matches. On a réalisé une bonne prestation lors du match aller à Johannesburg. On va se présenter sans handicap au score et j’espère que l’on réalisera le match idéal pour se qualifier. L’adversaire n’aura pas de pression et n’aura rien à perdre et tout à gagner. Mes joueurs ont suffisamment d’expérience, certains disputant leur quatrième demi-finale de suite, pour ne pas se laisser piéger. De plus, nous allons pouvoir compter sur l’apport de nos supporters qui sera déterminant tout en souhaitant jouer le match qu’il faut. »

Parlant du schéma tactique à adopter après le nul vierge de l’aller, un résultat qui sent le piège, Maher Kanzari a dit « en ce qui concerne la manière d’aborder le match, le plus important pour moi consiste à demeurer équilibrés. Il faudrait savoir défendre quand il le faut et attaquer quand il le faut. On ne foncera pas tête baissée et je pense qu’on a les moyens de marquer. Pour ce qui est de l’efficacité, nous avons marqué à tous les matches sauf lors du dernier match. Il ne faudra pas s’attendre à ce que l’on réussisse à marquer quatre buts par exemple. Le niveau entre les clubs s’est rapproché et j’espère que mes joueurs sauront marquer et faire la décision. »

A une question relative à l’état de forme de N’djeng et Darragi, Maher Kanzari a estimé que «Yannick et Oussama manquent encore de rythme après une saison difficile au FC Sion. Ce sont deux valeurs sûres. Leur venue nous ont fait gagner de la qualité sur le plan du jeu et ils seront là, je l’espère, lorsqu’on aura besoin d’eux. Nous leur gardons toute notre confiance, il leur faut tout simplement un peu de temps. »

Harrison Afful and Esperance chase fourth consecutive Champions League final berth

Harrison Afful believes his side Esperance will sneak past Orlando Pirates in the semi-final CAF Champions League return leg in Tunis on Saturday.

Afful is seeking his fourth appearance in the final since joining the club from Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko.

The Ghana international played full-throttle in the 0-0 draw in the first leg a fortnight ago.

He is expected to start as a right-winger in Maher Kanzari's side tonight at the Rades stadium.

"We have a team capable of beating any team and that is what we are going to do on Saturday," Afful told GHANASoccernet.com

"The first leg result is gone and the clash looks tricky because if they get a scoring draw, we are out. We will fight hard."

The winner of this tie will meet either champions Al Ahli or CotonSport in this year's Champions League final.
