Brikama held by Espérance

brikama%20united.jpg

The 2010/2011 Gambia First Division Champions Brikama United on Saturday afternoon hosted 24-time Tunisian league champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis at the Brikama Box Bar mini-stadium in the First round of the 2012 CAF Champions League qualifying rounds.

The visitors started as the brighter side as they opened the scoring as early as in the third minute of play through their captain Wajdi Bouazzi. Bouazzi capitalized from a defensive blunder thereby giving the away fans something to cheer about.

But their lead didn't last long as Brikama United's Musa Bojang leveled the scores nine minutes later after nodding in a powerful header from Saikou Omar Sawo's free kick cross thereby beating Moez Ben Cherifia at goal for Espérance.

Brikama started dominating the game and playing some quick counter attacking football but they weren't able to break through a strong and physical Espérance back four made of by Bilel Ben Brahim (sic), Aymen Ben Amor, Idrissa Coulibaly and Walid Hichri.

Iheb Msakni had the chance to increase the tally for his team in the 40th minute but he wasn't able to beat past Baboucarr Sanyang who stood his ground and punched Msakni's effort for a corner. The first period ended 1-1.

The second half was all Espérance's as the home side failed to create any meaningful chance. In the 55th minute, Espérance's 22-year-old Cameroonian attacker Hervé Yannick N'Djeng, had a perfect chance to double the lead for his team but his poor nodded ball was too easy for Sanyang to perfectly grip.

Both teams introduced some fresh legs as there were tired ones inside the pitch. Espérance coach Michel Decastel introduced Harrison Afful and Youssef Msakni (sic) in place of Iheb Msakni and Mohamed Ali Slama while the Brikama coach Sulayman Kuyateh introduced Sarjo Fadera and Nabi Darboe in place of Modou Jallow and Musa Bojang respectively.

Brikama's influential striker Foday Trawally had a brilliant chance to put his team ahead in the 62nd minute after receiving a low cross from second half substitute Nabi Darboe, Foday tried to dink the ball past Ben Cherifia but Cherifia stood his ground and put the ball out for a corner.

The final 15 minutes of the game was all Espérance's as they created chance upon chance but were unlucky to beat Baboucarr Sanyang who was one of Brikama's top performer on the day. It ended 1-1 at full time with Brikama having it all to do in the second leg scheduled to take place on the 6-8 April.

Qualification ties are decided over two legs, with aggregate goals used to determine the winner. If the sides are level on aggregate after the second leg, the away goals rule is applied, and if still level, the tie proceeds directly to a penalty shootout (no extra time is played).

The winner of this tie will either face Mozambican team Liga Muçulmana or Dynamos Football Club of Zimbabwe in the second and final round of the qualifiers with the first leg scheduled to take place on 27-29 April.

African Champions Esperance of Tunisia held by Brikama

_59289945_132453901.jpg

Esperance of Tunisia have begun the defence of their African Champions League title with a 1-1 draw in The Gambia against Brikama United.

Wajdi Bouazzi gave Esperance the lead in their secound round first leg game as early as the 3rd minute as he capitalisd on a defensive mistake to score.

The lead lasted just nine minutes as Brikama's Musa Bojang headed home a corner to level the scores.

Esperance went on to dominate the second-half but were unable to find a winner.

Two other former winners also found it hard going on Saturday in the first leg of their second round ties.

TP Mazembe , back-to-back winners in 2009 and 2010, were held 1-1 at Zambian side Power Dynamos.

The DR Congo team are back in the competition, having been disqualified in 2011 for fielding an ineligible player.

Meanwhile, the Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel , champions in 2007, could only manage a goalless draw away to Rwandan side APR FC .

The big winners on Saturday were Al Hilal, the Sudanese side semi-finalists last year, as they took a huge step toward the next stage with a 3-0 win at DFC 9th Arrondissement of Central African Republic.

Al Merreikh have the edge after drawing 2-2 with FC Platinum on Saturday in their first leg tie in Harare.

But much talk after the game centred on the Confederation of African Football's (Caf) decision to bar FC Platinum from using their home ground for the match.

Joel Ngodzo, who netted Platinum's second equaliser, was particularly critical.

His second half goal, though, has given Platinum a glimmer of hope ahead of the trip to Sudan.
"We were supposed to play in our home ground. This ground is not our ground. We are six hours from our ground," he said.

"But I trust my team to turn this (scoreline) around. There's no pressure on us. We'll keep on fighting."

Uganda midfielder Mike Mutyaba put Al Merreikh ahead on 18 minutes with a curling shot, before Mitchell Katsvairo levelled for FC Platinum from close range 10 minutes later.

Al Merreikh captain Saeed Mustafa headed in a corner seven minutes before the break, only for Ngodzo to have the final word just after the interval.

Ngodzo remains hopeful going into the second leg, whilst Merreikh's Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Osunwa insists they will pay Platinum due respect.

"We're happy with the result but we still need to work hard at home," Osunwa said.
"It's not over yet and we'll be well prepared."

There was also a 2-2 draw for another Zimbabwean side as Dynamos twice took the lead in Mozambique against Liga Muculmana.

Takesure Chinyama opened the scorng for Dynamos in the 22nd before Stelio Ernesto equalised just after half-time.

Chinyama grabbed his second of the game just three minutes later before Luis Vaz equalised for Liga Muculmana in the 73rd minute with a close range header.

On Friday, Ivory Coast club AF Amadou Diallo won 2-1 at JSM Bejaia , leaving the Algerian side with work to do in the return leg.

Their Algerian compatriots, ASO Chlef were held 0-0 at home by AS Vita Club of DR Congo.
Goals from Alou Bagayoko and Mahamane Cisse gifted Malian club Djoliba a 2-0 win at URA of Uganda. URA coach Alex Isabirye accused his players of showing Djoliba too much respect.

JOHANNESBURG — CAF Champions League title-holders Esperance of Tunisia and three former winners drew away this weekend as the last-32 qualifying phase kicked off.

Little Brikama United held Esperance 1-1 in Gambia with Wajdi Bouazzi giving the two-time champions a third-minute lead and Musa Bojang equalising with a powerful header soon after.
Although Esperance lacked suspended midfielders Khaled Korbi and Mejdi Traoui and injured defender Khalil Chamman, they were the superior team for long stages and should clinch a place next month in the final qualifying round.

Etoile Sahel, the other challengers from Tunisia and shock winners of the 2007 final against Al Ahly of Egypt, demonstrated their defensive strength by holding Rwandan military club APR 0-0 in Kigali.

TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose four titles makes them the third most successful club in the elite CAF competition after Ahly and Cairo neighbours Zamalek, conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 at Power Dynamos of Zambia.

Tanzania-born Mbwana Samata put the expensively assembled and star-stacked visiting team ahead on 16 minutes in Copperbelt town Kitwe and Kamzati Kabwe equalised six minutes from time.

Centre-back Stopilla Sunzu, whose penalty shootout goal gave Zambia a shock victory over Ivory Coast in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations final last month, was among three of the winning team in the Mazembe starting line-up.

Samata took advantage of slack marking at a packed Arthur Davies Stadium to beat goalkeeper Joshua Titima at his near post and Kabwe levelled off a free kick that was deflected past Robert Kidiaba.

Vita Club, champions in 1973 and the other half of a two-prong DR Congo assault, exceeded expectations by forcing a 0-0 draw at ASO Chlef of Algeria, who scored four times at home in a preliminary tie.

The Kinshasa outfit, who suffered a 4-1 drubbing away to Athletico Olympique of Burundi last weekend having won 5-0 at home, are now favoured to move a step closer to the $1.5 million first prize and a FIFA Club World Cup slot.

Zimbabwe representatives Platinum FC and Dynamos were involved in 2-2 draws against Al Merreikh of Sudan in Harare and Liga Muculmana of Mozambique in Maputo respectively.

Newcomers Platinum were furious at having to play in the capital -- a six-hour drive from their ground in central mining town Zvishavane, which did not have suitable accommodation for the visitors from Omdurman.

A Rufaro Stadium thriller saw the visitors lead twice in the opening half through Ugandan Mike Mutyaba and Saeed Mustafa and Mitchell Katsvairo on target for the miners.

Joel Ngodzo levelled again six minutes into a second half that ended with the Zimbabweans a man short after substitute defender Norman Togara was red carded following a second caution.
Takesure Chinyama twice put 1998 runners-up Dynamos in front only for Stelio 'Telinho' Marcelino and Manuel 'Muandro' Mbalango to equalise in a pulsating southern Africa derby.

Sudanese side Al-Hilal were the most impressive winners, scoring three goals without reply away to Diplomates FC of the Central African Republic in Bangui with Mudather Eltaib, Zimbabwean Edward Sadomba and Bakry Al Madina netting.

BRIKAMA UTD SCARE ESPERANCE

brikama-d.jpg

Monday, March 26, 2012

Gambian champions Brikama United continued their remarkable success story in their debut season in the CAF Champions League with an encouraging performance against defending Champions Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Saturday.

The West Coast Region outfit came from a goal down to secure an impressive 1-1 home draw with the two-time African champions in the first leg of the second round qualifiers of the 2012 edition.
The gulf in years between the two teams is so much that Esperance Sportive de Tunis were in existence for 84 years before Brikama United was formed in 2003 and have won the Tunisian premier league title a record 24 times.

Esperence travelled to Banjul with a chartered flight on Thursday and have an annual budget of over US$5 million dollars, but one could hardly notice any difference between the two sides on the pitch during the 90 minutes.

Esperance, a team coached by the Swiss,Michel Decastel, are one of the most decorated clubs in Tunisian football, having amassed no fewer than 14 league titles, seven Tunisian Cups and two Tunisian Super Cups in the past 20 years alone.

On paper, it was thought to be an easy ride for EST and when they took a 4th minute lead through Captain Wajdi Bouazzi, the worst was feared. But Brikama United, cheered on by a passionate home crowd at the Box Bar mini-stadium, snatched a 12th minute equaliser courtesy of Musa Bojang after a scramble in the opponents area from a free-kick.

After the equaliser, Sulayman Kuyateh's side gained confidencce and began to possess the ball even better than their more illustrious opponents.

The visitors were also threatening occasionally, especially on the break, but their efforts were thwarted by the Brikama United defence marshalled by Adama Sabally and Sheikh Omar Sawo.

Ben Armor headed over from a corner and Mohammed Slama's effort was tipped over by Bubacarr Sanyang before the former Gambia U-17 keeper tipped another Mohammed Nazakni cracking effort over.

Brikama's best chance to go ahead came in the 20th minute when they were denied by a last minute intervention from the Esperance keeper Ben Cherifia and just past the half hour mark, the Sateba Boys striker Foday Trawally shot over the bar from close range when he could have done better.

Just three minutes into the second half, Ebou Kanteh saw the Esperance keeper off his line and tried a clever lob but Ben Cherifia was quick to step back to avert the danger before Abdoulie Bojang also cleared an Esperance goal bound effort off the line at the other end.

Striker Foday Trawally missed a golden opportunity to win the game for his side when he shot straight at the feet of keeper Ben Cherifia in the 72nd minute after he was put through by Nabi Darboe. The Brikama substitute forced his way into the right side of the Esperance defence and sent a low cross into the box which was completely missed by Esperence's Malian international defender Idrissa Coulibaly. But Trawally missed from just three meters out.

The game eventually ended goalless and despite their inexperience, Brikama United have won the respect of the entire nation and the North Africans and probably the continent with their performance.

The return leg in Tunis is in two weeks time and a win or a score draw of more than one will see Brikama United qualify to the third and final round of qualifiers at the expense of the African champions.

Brikama salvage point from Caf CL Holders Esperance

Brikama United ensured a share of the stakes to frustrate Sportive Club De Tunis' effort of securing an away win in the Tunisian club title defense campaign.
Esperance are holders of the continent top tier club championship and a win from Brikama- who are minors in the tournament- will see them get off to a perfect start and a quick opening goal from vice captain Wajdi Bouazzi after sloppy defending from the host put them on the road with only three minutes ticking in the first-half. Sulayman Kuyateh's men rallied shortly after and got over the deficit to pull an equalizing goal nine minutes later.
The leveler instilled confidence into the Satyba Boys and their game-dictating passes was greeted with applause from the turnouts of locals at the full to the brim Boxbar mini-stadium.
Tunisia's most popular team Esperance established in 1919 first made the push for goal when a cross cut from the left-wing met Joseph N'Djeng's poor effort. The Tunisian side managed by Swiss coach Michel Decastel raced to the lead after only three minutes - the fastest goal Brikama has so far conceded in the Caf Champions League.
In an effort to pounce on defense blunders from nervous-looking Gambian side, Wajdi Bouazzi came close to earning himself what should have been a deserved brace early in the game but disappointingly packed his shot over. Still piling pressure, the visitor's Cameroon international Joseph N'Deng proved an instant menace to the Brikama back-four. Before a turnout of tumultuous spectators, Brikama managed to hold their nerves and immediately got an equaliser courtesy of a scramble in the Tunisian half and unmarked Musa Bojang restored pride for the Gambia domestic League defending champions and ran to the corner to be mobbed by team-mates in celebration. The Sateba Boys picked up confidence and striker Foday Trawally's throw ball handed goalscorer Musa Bojang a chance to double up the advantage but barely got hold of the speeding ball.
Esperance, as expected, showed class and their game experience and quick inter change of passes was overwhelming. Striker N'Deng imposing physicality was a plus to the Esperance's attack and his combination with Nasakini Mohamed made it more lethal. N'Deng beat of his markers, made an own run to latch in a swing cross that lanky defender met up with a strayed header.
Goalkeeper Bubacarr Sanyang who was a standout in the away win in Dakar did not disappoint and was up to task to wad off increasing onslaughts from Aouadhi Karim, Kobbi Khaled and Ben Amar Aymen before break.
With three key players sidelined by injury including Captain Khalil Chammam, Esperance showed no sign of weakness as in a depleted side. Modou Jallow got the referee's first caution for tucking his boot against Coulibally Idrissa's.
Either side made substitutions from break but the melee looked destine for a stalemate. His first touch of the ball, new entrant Nabi Darboe chipped in a through ball and lone Striker Foday Trawally followed up into the box and collided into the goalkeeper who needed medic's aid as Brikama finds a game-winner in the final minutes.
Brikama now travels to Tunis for the second leg of the qualifiers for the tournament proper.

Shared honor for Esperance and Brikama United

African Champions league holders Esperance of Tunisia shared points in a 1-1 draw against Brikama United of The Gambia on March 24, 2012 at the Box Bar mini stadium in Brikama, 38 kilometers east of the capital, Banjul.
The draw is the beginning of Esperance title defence in the second round of the CAF Champions League.

Three minutes into the game, Esperance skipper Wajdi Bouazzi cuts across the middle capitalizing on a defensive error to fire into Brikama's net (0-1).

But Brikama responded with an equalizer in the 12th minute through a header by Musa Bojang from a free kick (1-1).

Esperance Aymen Ben Amor showed a sign of disappointment when his 23rd minute volley handled easily by Brikama goalkeeper Baboucarr Sanyang, while Joseph Jenc's 28th minute powerful shot from 16 yards slightly went high.

Long range efforts and half chances from the Tunisian side fail to see them win their 2nd round first leg encounter even after dominating much of the 2nd period of the game.

Brikama goalkeeper Baboucarr Sanyang who was kept busy throughout the game, denied Esperance Nsakni Mohamed Jhab from close range after his Cameroonian team mate, Joseph Jenc put him trough inside the penalty box.

Gambia league champions Brikama United put up stiff resistance in the first half but fall short under par with the 24 times Tunisian league winners Esperance in the second period of the game.

Brikama United could have sealed victory 72 minutes into the game, but wasted the easiest of chances from close range. Foday Trawally shoots straight at Esperance goalkeeper Ben Cherifia from three yards, a low cross from midfielder Nani Darboe.

Esperance will host Brikama United in Tunis in the second leg on the weekend of April 6-8, 2012.

Esperance, two-time African champions, was given a by in the first round of the competition, while Brikama United ousted Senegal opponents US Ouakam in a two-legged tie.

Brikama United share spoils with Esperance in CAF Champions League

brikama-united-fc-d.jpg

Monday, March 26, 2012

The Gambia's league champions Brikama United came from behind to share points with current African champions Esperance of Tunisia, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the second round tie played on Saturday at West Coast Region's biggest football arena Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium.
The African and Tunisian champions made a flying start to the game and caused serious assaults at Brikama United's goal mouth.
They then opened the score through striker Wajdi Bouazzi in the 4th minute of the game after slashing through Brikama United's defence line to smash the ball at the net and earn a lead.
Brikama United responded back for an equaliser and created some goal-scoring chances, which paid dividend in the 15th minute of the game when striker Musa Bojang levelled the score for Brikama United from a goal-mouth scramble and thus the first half ended 1-1 all, which happened to be the final score at the end of the 90-minute tough encounter.
Esperance will host Brikama United in the return leg on 7 April this year in Tunis.
Esperance Coach optimistic
The head coach of Esperance Michael Castel said they will come all out to snatch a victory against Brikama United in the return leg in a fortnight in Tunisia.
Coach Castel made this statement in an interview with reporters shortly after their crunch clash with the Gambian league champions.
Castel said the game was "very tough" and Brikama United performed "very well" and managed to snatch a draw against his team.
He expressed confidence that his team will beat Brikama United in the return leg and secure a place in the group phase, adding that they cannot afford to miss the group stage and would do all they could to ensure a win against Brikama United.
The head coach of Brikama United, Sulayman Kuyateh, in his remarks, said he was really impressed with the performance of his team despite the 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Coach Kuyateh said his side put up a respectable performance against Esperance, adding that his team should have won the game but failed to capitalize on their goal-scoring opportunities.
Brikama United can beat Esperance in the return leg in Tunisia in a fortnight and progress to the group stage of the CAF African Champions league, the Gambian coach says with optimism.

Brikama Capt. '100% hopeful' of Tunis win

Brikama United captain Saidou Jammeh has said he is '100% hopeful of a win in Tunis' when the Gambian league holders visit the North African country for the second leg of the Caf champions League preliminary qualifying round.

Out of the interviewed players after game, Brikama team Captain Saidou Jammeh is the sole player of the WRC club to have spoken brimming with much confidence that Brikama- who had failed to secure a win at home – can do the damage away from Banjul.

"I'm 100% hopeful that we can make it. Is just that we need to reinforce certain things on the striking force and hopefully we will do that one before we travel to Tunis." Brikama United captain said.

The Gambia 2011 champions striker hardly kept the visitor's defense on their toes with their only real chance on goal - after they equalized –being a swing cross masterminded by playmaker Ebou Kanteh with goal scorer Musa Bojang lately followed up in the box and gave no trouble for Esperance goalkeeper to gather.

Like his coach, Jammeh admits that his team's attack made a below par performance and thus added they need much bolstering in that department. Musa Bojang plays behind deployed lone striker Foday Trawally while Ebou kinteh cuts through as an all-rounder but the team strike still looks blunt. The substitution of Nabi Darboe didn't help either.

"Brikama United is a very young team compared to Tunis and then we are going to prepare more for the return leg in Tunis. We believe 1-1- is not a bad game for Brikama United comparing Brikama to Esperance. If you can recall in Ouakam we lost and had to turn everything around.
So, in two weeks time anything can happen in Tunis. We cannot promise because Esperance is different from Ouakam. Am not going to promise we are going to attack but we are going to make a strategy that we can use to at least qualify" Saidou said on a final note at the post match press conference.

The head coach of Brikama United FC, Sulayman Kuyateh, is hopeful of registering a major shock in African club football when his team meet Esperance for the decisive leg of their African Champions League second round qualifier in Tunis.

The Gambian champions held the defending Champions, Esperance of Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in front of a passionate home crowd at the Brikama Box Bar mini-stadium on Sunday with the return leg to be played in the Tunisian capital in 10 days time.

Commenting after that scintillating performance from his side, the 32-year-old Kuyateh, the youngest coach in Gambian club football has declared that his side have what it takes to overcome Esperance and secure a place in the third and final round of qualifiers at the Tunisian's 45,000 seater stadium.

Kuyateh, while stating that he is impressed with the way his boys played during the first leg, added that despite that, they need to double up their efforts to secure three points in the return leg. He said that Brikama United is a young team and with the skills and talents they have, he hopes and prays that his boys will do their utmost best to ensure that they have a place in the African championship.

"My boys really obeyed my commands and they played as I told them to do during the match," he said. He intimated that their intention was to defeat Esperance in Brikama, but it was quite unfortunate that they could not. Hepromised to secure three points in the return leg in Tunisia.

Kuyateh thanked and praised his players for their tremendous efforts during the first leg and urged them to do more in thereturn leg. He equally commended his fans for their wonderful support and encouraged them to keep up the great momentum.
