Espérance de Tunis suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 defeat this afternoon against eternal rivals Club Africain at the Radès Stadium in Matchday 29 of Ligue 1. It was a cruel and bitter loss for the Blood and Gold, who controlled the game for long periods before being punished by a devastating counterattack deep into stoppage time. A defeat that officially ends Espérance’s title hopes ahead of the final round of the championship.

As expected in a high-stakes derby, the opening minutes were cautious from both sides. Neither team wanted to take unnecessary risks early on, and clear opportunities were almost nonexistent during the first quarter of an hour.

Gradually, however, Espérance began to impose their rhythm and push forward. By the 17th minute, the Blood and Gold had started to dominate possession and territory, moving closer to Club Africain’s goal with increasing confidence.

Kouceila Boualia tried his luck in the 19th minute but failed to hit the target. A few minutes later, Hamza Khadhraoui responded for Club Africain with a shot that sailed over Amen-Allah Memmiche’s crossbar.

Espérance continued to control the match and looked the more dangerous side. In the 28th minute, Boualia once again found himself in a promising position but could not keep his effort on target. The biggest chance of the first half came in the 33rd minute when Boualia received the ball in an excellent position, only to see his curling effort go narrowly wide.

Despite struggling to create chances, Club Africain remained dangerous on the counterattack. In the 38th minute, Aymen Harzi forced Memmiche into an excellent save on his line. Shortly afterward, Florian Danho tested Mouhib Chamekh, but the Club Africain goalkeeper gathered comfortably.

At halftime, the picture was clear: Espérance had dominated possession and initiative but lacked efficiency in the final third. It was a frustratingly sterile domination that still left hope for a breakthrough after the restart.

The second half followed the exact same pattern. In the 56th minute, Moez Hadj-Ali wasted a huge opportunity from inside the box as his powerful strike flew over the bar. Two minutes later, Mohamed Ben Ali produced a crucial defensive intervention to deny Firas Chaouat on one of Club Africain’s rare dangerous attacks.

The Blood and Gold kept pushing forward relentlessly. Hadj-Ali missed another chance with a header in the 61st minute, while the match was temporarily interrupted a few minutes later because of heavy smoke from the stands in an electrifying derby atmosphere.

As time passed, frustration continued to grow for Espérance. Club Africain increasingly relied on tactical fouls to break the rhythm and preserve the goalless draw, while the Blood and Gold searched desperately for the winning goal.

Then came what may have been the decisive moment of the match. In the 83rd minute, Yan Sasse found himself only a few meters from goal but somehow headed wide with the net seemingly at his mercy. It felt like the chance that could have changed everything.

Espérance threw everything forward in the closing stages. With spaces becoming tighter, Onuche Ogbelu and Mohamed-Amine Tougaï both attempted efforts from distance but failed to find the target. In the 90th+9 minute, Tougaï once again came close, only to see his effort blocked by a defender.

Club Africain were then reduced to ten men after Philippe Kinzumbi received a red card in the 90th+12 minute for a foul on Abdramane Konaté. Yet even with the numerical advantage, luck continued to abandon the Blood and Gold. Two minutes later, Mouhib Chamekh produced a decisive save to deny Yan Sasse from a well-struck effort heading on target.

And then came the unimaginable.

In the 90th+16 minute, with Espérance fully committed forward, Club Africain launched a lightning counterattack three against one. Ghaïth Zaâlouni finished clinically to stun Radès and complete the perfect smash-and-grab victory.

The final whistle was met with shock and silence around the stadium. Espérance had controlled the match, created the better opportunities, and dictated the tempo, but once again lacked the finishing touch required in decisive encounters. Club Africain, meanwhile, defended courageously, absorbed the pressure, and struck at the final possible moment.

This painful defeat officially ends Espérance de Tunis’ hopes of retaining the league title. The Blood and Gold must now focus on securing second place in the final round of the championship next Thursday.
