The long-awaited Tunis derby between Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Club Africain, played this Sunday afternoon at the Radès Stadium for Matchday 14 of Ligue 1, ended in a goalless draw (0-0). A frustrating result for the Blood and Gold, who dominated most of the game but were denied by bad luck, injuries, and a missed penalty.
The match began with a fiery intensity. Club Africain players were overly aggressive, targeting Belaïli and Jelassi in the early minutes, with the referee opting to let play continue.
Espérance tried to impose their rhythm and control the midfield, but two early injuries disrupted their plans. In the 14th minute, Yan Sasse picked up a muscle injury and was replaced by Kouceila Boualia. Only a few minutes later, Belaïli, struggling with a knock to the knee, was also forced off and replaced by Konaté in the 21st minute. Two forced substitutions that changed the face of the game.
Despite those setbacks, the Blood and Gold maintained their grip on the match, showing determination and superior technical quality. In the 40th minute, Danho came close to scoring but was denied by Club Africain goalkeeper Mouhib Chamekh, who reacted quickly to clear the danger.
Espérance were clearly the better side during the first half but couldn’t make their dominance count, and the opening 45 minutes ended goalless (0-0).
The second half started with both sides showing renewed energy. In the 54th minute, Espérance were awarded a penalty after a handball by Shili inside the box. Danho stepped up to take it, but his attempt was saved by goalkeeper Chamekh (56’). A decisive moment that would ultimately shape the outcome of the derby.
Later on, Ogbelu tried his luck from distance (62’), and Club Africain’s Sadek Mahmoud replied in kind (69’), but neither shot was threatening. The match then became fragmented, full of fouls and interruptions, breaking the flow of play.
In the closing stages, Club Africain pushed forward and nearly found the net with a dangerous effort in the 87th minute, well saved by Ben Saïd. During stoppage time, Espérance’s defense had to stay alert as the visitors applied late pressure, but they managed to hold firm until the final whistle.
A goalless draw that leaves a bittersweet taste for Espérance, who could have taken all three points if not for the two early injuries and the missed penalty. Still, the team showed resilience, discipline, and collective spirit throughout the encounter.
Despite the missed opportunity, Espérance remain strong leaders and will look to bounce back quickly as the Ligue 1 season continues - with confidence, unity, and ambition intact.
