The pre-match press conference for the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-final between Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Mamelodi Sundowns featured statements from both coaches, Maher Kanzari and Miguel Cardoso. Each shared their analysis and expectations ahead of what promises to be an intense clash.
Kanzari: "We are writing our own history"
The 'Blood and Gold' coach, Maher Kanzari, who will oversee his first match in the Espérance dugout since his appointment, insisted on the need to turn the page on the past. Espérance eliminated Sundowns in last season's semi-final, but for him, that victory is now history.
"Every season and every match is different. We must focus on the present and not on what happened last year. Yes, we beat them in the semi-final, but that doesn't matter now."
Kanzari also highlighted the need for his players to impose their game and focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the current opponent:
"The most important thing is what we do now. We are going to face a different Sundowns, and we must be ready to write our own history."
The 'Blood and Gold' know that a good result in the first leg, in South Africa, would be a major advantage before the return leg in Radès a week later.
Cardoso: "Espérance has a strong identity"
Miguel Cardoso, now at the helm of Sundowns, faces his former club after leading them to the continental final last season. Aware of the changes since his departure, he nevertheless expects to find a team true to its well-defined style of play.
"Espérance has seen several players and coaches come and go since my departure, but this club has its own identity. We must prepare to face a team that remains true to its playing principles."
Speaking about this two-legged tie, the Portuguese coach stressed the importance of managing the tie over both legs:
"This kind of tie isn't decided over 90 minutes. The first leg is crucial, but it's the two legs overall that will determine who advances."
Cardoso did not hide a certain emotion at the thought of returning to Radès, but he assured that he is fully focused on his team's objective:
"We know that playing in Tunisia will be difficult, but we are counting on our supporters to give us the necessary energy during the first leg. It will be an exciting match between two teams that play attacking and ambitious football."
A prestigious clash
The clash between Espérance and Sundowns promises to be a real test for both teams. Between Kanzari wanting to make his mark and Cardoso aiming to prove he can lead Sundowns to the top, the tactical battle will be intense.
The stage is set for tomorrow at Loftus Versfeld Stadium for the first chapter of this thrilling showdown.
