On the eve of the opening match of the CAF Champions League group stage, Maher Kanzari delivered a clear message: Espérance de Tunis want to strike hard from the very first whistle. Tomorrow night at the Radès Stadium, against Stade Malien of Bamako, the Blood and Gold begin a new continental journey with the firm intention of laying solid foundations for what they hope will be a long and successful campaign.
The Espérance coach insists on the crucial importance of this first encounter.
“The first match of a group stage is always very important. Winning it means entering the competition on the right foot. We are aiming for the quarter-finals, so we need to secure one of the top two spots,” he explained. Aware that “on the first matchday, all four teams in the group start with equal chances,” Kanzari calls on his players to deliver “a strong introduction, with a victory and a convincing performance in front of our supporters.”
Regarding his team’s preparation, Kanzari remains confident. “We are ready as we should be. It won’t be an easy match, but I hope we will produce the performance needed, with a win at the end.” His words reflect a careful balance between the caution required for such an important fixture and the ambition of a club accustomed to major African nights.
The coach also addressed the issue of injuries, with several key players sidelined. But he expressed no doubts about the ability of his squad to respond. “Despite the absences of essential players, the rest of the squad is just as talented and ready. Those who will play are capable of rising to the occasion, and I have full confidence in them to succeed and honour the absentees.”
In a Radès Stadium expected to be buzzing, Espérance will seek tomorrow to kick off their African campaign in ideal fashion. A win to start, and a message for the rest of the competition: the Blood and Gold are determined to uphold their status and aim high.
