Espérance de Tunis suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns this afternoon at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the first leg of their 2024/2025 CAF Champions League quarter-final. The encounter was largely dominated by the South Africans, but the result still leaves hope for the Blood and Gold ahead of the second leg.
Right from the kick-off, Sundowns controlled the game with impressive possession, averaging 80% over the course of the match and peaking at 89% at times. However, this technical and tactical superiority didn't translate into numerous clear-cut chances, as Espérance maintained a solid defensive shape and looked to exploit any counter-attacking opportunities.
Unfortunately, the only time the Blood and Gold defensive wall was breached was in the 54th minute. A lapse in concentration allowed the ever-dangerous Peter Shalulile to pounce in the box and put the ball past Ben Saïd. A goal that gives the South Africans a valuable advantage heading into the second leg.
Despite Sundowns' dominance, Espérance might have hoped for more had their attackers been sharper. Sasse, Mokwana, and Belaïli had some promising situations, but poor decision-making in the final third prevented the team from equalising.
Overall, this first leg quarter-final didn't reach great heights in terms of spectacle. Sundowns were the better side and deservedly won the first leg, but the tie is still wide open. Espérance will have the chance to turn the tie around in a week's time at Radès Stadium. Backed by a full stadium roaring them on, they will need to deliver a perfect performance to keep their Champions League journey alive.
The Blood and Gold are capable of it. With the spirit they reserve for big occasions and the unconditional support of their fans, they can turn the tide. The belief is there!
