Espérance Sportive de Tunis kicked off their 2024/2025 CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Djoliba AC at the Radès stadium. This brilliant performance has reassured supporters and sent a clear message to their rivals: the Blood and Gold are ready to conquer the continent.
From the first whistle, Regecampf's men displayed their ambition. It took them just four minutes to break the deadlock. Youcef Belaïli, in fine form despite a minor injury, delivered a sublime pass to Bouchniba, who fired a powerful shot into the back of the net (1-0).
This goal gave the Blood and Gold wings, as they dominated possession and stifled Djoliba. Mokwana was particularly active, with several attempts, including a shot that was brilliantly saved by Malian goalkeeper Youssouf Koita in the 27th minute. Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute: a brilliant backheel from Belaïli found Mokwana at the penalty spot, and the latter doubled the lead (2-0). Unfortunately, on this play, Belaïli picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Bouguerra, a significant blow to the Tunisian attack.
After the break, Djoliba tried to fight back. A powerful shot from Seydou Diabaté in the 48th minute forced goalkeeper Memmiche into a stunning save. But Espérance continued to control the game, looking to extend their lead.
Despite the injury to Meriah, who was substituted in the 68th minute, the Blood and Gold found the resources to maintain their dominance. In the 76th minute, Mokwana, once again, delivered a perfect cross for Bouguerra, who headed home to make it 3-0.
In the dying seconds of stoppage time, as everyone awaited the final whistle, Koussay Maâcha capped off the evening in style. Played in by Ben Ali, he scored the fourth goal with a cool finish (4-0).
Against a respected Djoliba AC side known for their solidity, Espérance demonstrated that they have the quality to go far in this competition. The well-oiled team was able to cope with injuries to key players, notably Belaïli, whose condition will be closely monitored in the coming days.
With three points in the bag and a top-notch performance, Espérance have positioned themselves as one of the favorites in this group. Their next challenge: a trip to Angola in ten days to face Sagrada Esperança.
The Blood and Gold have made a strong impression tonight, and supporters hope that this resounding victory is just the beginning of a great African campaign.
